the first of many times i'm sure we'll be asking that question this time of the year. thanks for joining us tonight. i'm will thomas. >> i'm brian bolter. the entire d.c. area under a freeze warning, the first sign that the season is here. fox 5's gary mcgrady in the weather center now. >> thanks, brian. everybody out there dressed like it's a little winterish out tonight. temperatures are dropping. let me show you current temperatures right now as we suspected, out in the suburbs is where the temperatures are dropping first. gaithersburg 37, frederick 37. here in town we're still sitting at 51 degrees in manassas, 39. you mentioned that freeze warning. it is in place for montgomery county, back over to loudoun county, back down to prince william county, frederick county in it as well. so are carroll and howard. right here in d.c. and fairfax county, prince george's county and anne arundel county you're just talking about a frost advisory. so we're not expecting temperatures here in the district to drop as low,

especially those western in northwestern neighborhoods. 41 tonight in town, but notice gaithersburg right down to freezing, frederick 28 degrees, so well below freezing, dulles 34 right on the cusp there and i think areas right outside the beltway have a chance of dropping down, too. just keep that in mind it. looks like some places in the region will have their first freeze of the season so far this year and it looks like we're kind of gradually warming up through the within. however, it will feel fallish out there for tomorrow. so full forecast is coming up. ♪[ music ] go nats! >> the road to the world series is paved with cheering fans, music bands and crowded metro

a court appearance today for two men accused of a vicious attack on capitol hill. after the brief hearing tommy branch and sunny kuti were sent back to jail. the men are accused of robbing and beating thomas maslin near eastern market in august. maslin suffered a traumatic brain injury and is facing months, if not years of physical therapy. a third suspect michael moore was in court yesterday. d.c. police using a new technique on youtube to help solve cold cases posting video from victim's family members to help generate leads. >> when it comes to solving cold cases any bit of publicity goes a long way. d.c. police hope this new approach will bring attention to profile cases and closure for families. >> i just miss him and his kids miss him. >> i need you to care. >> so anything that you could do to help me to find my daughter. >> three mothers each asking for help solving their child's

case. >> please just come forward and tell what you know about marcus' death. >> their pleas playing out on youtube in videos produced by d.c. police. it's a new effort to bring more attention town solved cases in the district. among -- to unsolved cases in the district. among the cases profiled is of that 35-year-old marcus johnson. he died in may, 2006 after being shot in the 1400 block of first street southwest. his mother mildred johnson wants justice. >> it's only right that i have a place to go and say to marcus i can let you go. you're free now and i need that and his brothers need that and his children need that. >> 30-year-old melvin seals was fatally shot in april, 2008. it happened in the 1200 block of moore street northeast. his mother debra seals craven still struggles to come to terms with his death. >> it's hard for me as a mother to accept that i won't see my child again.

i won't see that beautiful smile or that beautiful face. >> the last victim profiled is 24-year-old unique harris, a missing mother of two young boys last seen at her home in the 2400 block of hartford street southeast. valencia harris made it her life mission to find her daughter. >> she was a very, very active mom in the children's lives. she loved people. she loved going doing things with her boys. >> the pain in each mother's appeal is heartbreaking. d.c. police hope the public will watch the videos and perhaps someone will have a tip that can solve a case, a tip that can give three grieving mothers long awaited closure. as warnings d.c. police offering up to $25,000 -- as always, d.c. police offering up to $25,000 for information leading to arrest or conviction. a key ruling in the university of maryland beating case today. a judge decided jurors can view other video from that night of two prince george's county police officers allegedly beating a maryland student.

the attack happened after the terps beat duke in a basketball game. that triggered this huge wild celebration in college park. the officers, reginald baker and james harrison, were caught on tape hitting the student. defense lawyers argued jurors need to view that tape in con ex it of what happened that -- in context of what happened that night. a former school bus driver in prince george's county found out her punishment today. theresa douglas was convicted of assault and destruction of property after she rammed already school bus into a trailer last year. a judge sentenced her to 10 years in prison, but she'll only have to serve half of the sentence. state's attorney angela alsobrooks says douglas was targeting a co-worker when she crashed into the trailer. the trailer was used as an employee lounge for bus drivers. >> miss douglas' conduct in my mind was absolutely absurd. rd. she was exacting revenge against an individual who was not even present in the building at the time that she rammed her bus, her school bus,

into the side of this building. >> fortunately no students were inside the bus at the time of the crash. several people in the trailer suffered minor injuries. douglas will be on probation for five years after she's released. leased. earlier this week we went grocery shopping with d.c. council member mary cheh. she wanted to bring attention to how little money some people have to put food on the table, so cheh decided to take what's called the food stamp challenge, only $30 for an entire week of food. that was monday. tonight fox 5's matt ackland checked back in. >> reporter: what if you only had $30 to pay for food for an entire week? wouldn't be easy to do, especially if you think about a sandwich like this costing $8, but one d.c. council member is putting herself through what is called the food stamp challenge and today she's on day four. it took nearly an hour to shop. council member mary cheh had to choose her food carefully,

things that would make several meals and items that were inexpensive. she counted every cent along the way. >> let's put these back and i'll just take four. >> reporter: the grocery bill was close. it went just over the $30 mark. so cheh had to put something back. >> something has to go. >> if i take a banana off, would that work? >> that might work. >> reporter: we wanted to know now council member cheh was holding up on the challenge. >> i think it's challenging to have a nutritious diet on this amount of money. >> reporter: cheh said there was no other way around it. she had to choose meals full of carbohydrates instead of more expensive healthier meals with more protein. >> i had to admit this, but the last three nights i've had spaghetti for dinner. >> reporter: through the journey cheh has thought about hungry parents and their children who need food stamps just to get by. she referred to it as food insecurity. >> if i had small children, not only would i be concerned about what i was going to eat, but i

poster which leads in part in any war between civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. at d.c. metro station at u street many passers-by frowned at the message. >> who is the savage? no human being should ever be called the savage. >> reporter: somebody has already expressed extreme irritation with this poster by attempting to deface it. they pasted something sticky with the word hate on it. this has already been mostly scraped off. d.c. resident diane tefter who told us she's jewish read about the poster and hand scrawled a counter-message saying all human beings are created in the image of god. she stood with her sign for a few minutes in front of the poster and asked a stranger to take her picture so she could post it on her facebook page. now a more organized response to the poster is being mounted

by care, the council on american islamic relations. a counter poster will quote a verse of the qur'an saying show forgiveness, speak for justice and avoid the ignorant. >> this message is for our children, for our community, but also for the public to know that islamic values are not different than christian and jewish values. >> that's really beautiful. and that can be applied in any religion or any culture. >> reporter: the counter posters with the quote from the qur'an are scheduled to go up at four metro stops on or about tuesday. john henrehan, fox 5 news. at least one member of congress wants people in our region to boycott metro over those controversial ads. democratic congressman mike

honda of california called on metro riders to boycott the stations until the ads come down even though a court ordered metro has to put them up. honda has served six terms in the house and is the founder and chair of the congressional anti-bullying caucus. a dire warning from defense secretary leon panetta. he says the united states is facing a possible cyber pearl harbor that could virtually paralyze the nation. fox's jennifer griffin has the latest from the pentagon. >> reporter: defense secretary leon panetta warning of the growing threat of cyber attacks against the u.s. >> cyber attack perpetrated by nation states or violent extremist groups could be as destructive as the terrorist attack on 9/11. attack o >> reporter: this comes after a former government official said u.s. authorities believe iranian hackers are responsible for recent cyber attacks against major oil and gas companies in saudi arabia and

qatar. >> the shamoon virus was probably the most destructive attack that the private sector has seen to date. these attacks mark a significant escalation of the cyber threat. >> reporter: secretary panetta saying if the u.s. detects an imminent cyber attack that can cause significant destruction, the military could take action. >> the department has developed the capability to conduct effective operations to counter there.s to our national interests in cyberspace. -- threats to our national interests in cyberspace. we will only do so to defend our nation, to defend our interests, to defend our allies. >> reporter: the pentagon chief also urging lawmakers to pass cyber security legislation. >> without it we are and we will be vulnerable. congress must act and it must act now. >> reporter: secretary panetta says the pentagon is investing $3 billion a year in cyber security. at the pentagon jennifer griffin, fox news.

a fox 5 health alert now, a medical examiner says a virginia man is dead after getting the rare form of fungal meningitis. 47-year-old douglas wingate of salem died last month after receiving a spinal injection connected to the outbreak. so far 14 people have died and 184 people remain sick. a minnesota woman is the first to file a lawsuit in connection to the outbreak suing the maker of the steroid after she was given an injection for back pain and experienced symptoms consistent with fungal meningitis. the woman says she's been tasted and is waiting for the results. it's -- tested and is waiting for the results. it's estimated 14,000 people could have been given that tainted injection. up next the viral video that's gone viral, a bus driver who punches a woman in the face. >> and coming up later tonight. >> reporter: they're walking to find a cure for breast cancer. i'm beth parker. i'll tell you what's different this year.

man taping her child's hands to the wall. police say she kicked her 2- year-old daughter in the stomach, beat her with a jug, glued her hand to the wall with super glue. the child suffered brain bleeding and information a coma for several days. a cleveland bus driver has been suspended after video surfaced of him punching a female passenger, even the sound of it a bit chilling. this video may be disturbing. here's how it all unfolded. >> you're going to jail. >> you heard that. another passenger recorded the moments leading up to the fight it. shows the two arguing and the passenger approaching the driver. you can't see what she did to him, but moments later you see the driver get up and punch the woman right in the face knocking her to the ground. the cleveland transit authority is now investigating. police we're told identified the woman and so far she is not pressing charges. tonight a warning for people looking to save a few bucks online, buying prescriptions on the internet. it may be risky. we'll tell you which three counterfeit drugs to watch out

this walk. this year it's down to 1,600. >> we have seen a difference in our participation numbers this year, but you know what? the three-day community is stronger than ever. we are appreciative of any participation numbers because every dollar we raise makes a difference in our fight to end breast cancer. breast cancer never takes brake and neither can we. we-- a break and neither can we. >> reporter: beth parker, fox 5 news. turning now to weather, i guess you were talking about the first possible freeze of the season, gary. >> freeze warning, right? >> there's a freeze warning basically north of the district. it's a frost advisory in town which is to be expected. the suburbs can easily get much colder than we can in town. it will probably be another few weeks before we get a freeze in the city the way it looks now. tell you. what in terms of what is going on out there overnight tonight, this will be it looks like a

pretty much widespread temperatures in terms of what we'll have with clear skies and light winds, relatively light winds. it does look like it's going to be a very cold night and tomorrow looks like it's going to be a beautiful fall day out there with temperatures warming up into the lower 60s. we'll start off cold, though. freeze warning in effect for the purple counties. that's montgomery county, loudoun county, prince william county, fauquier county and everybody along i-81 and down towards the shenandoah there. the light blue including d.c., including fairfax county, prince george's county and anne arundel, too, is under a frost advisory, won't get so cold in town tonight. we're not expecting a freeze, maybe a little frost threat out there by early, early tomorrow morning. temperatures right now here in the city dropping off to 51 degrees, gaithersburg 41. that's actually come up a little bit. 36 now for frederick. that's actually dropped a bit since we first started at 10:00, quantico 46 and manassas

39 degrees. over by the bay temperatures are a little warmer for annapolis. they're sitting at 55. for tomorrow really good. i mean we have lots of sunshine tomorrow, high pressure in control, still a batch of cool weather on top of us. we're talking 60s for highs tomorrow and it looks like we're talking about lower 60s for just about everybody. things will change, though, for sunday. warm front begins to come on through. that will warm up the mid- atlantic. so from the 60s tomorrow we'll warm right up to the lower to maybe even mid-70s on sunday depending on how much in the way of sunshine we get. i want to point out this frontal system because it will come through monday. in advance of that front we'll have some showers and maybe a few thunderstorms. here's your weekend forecast. looks real nice, beautiful fall day tomorrow, temperature of 62 degrees. again we warm up sunday. we're going to go 72 here, but it wouldn't surprise me if we get enough sunshine on sunday

some of our southern communities may be pushing the middle 70s, so much warmer sunday. in terms of where we're going to be right now and tonight, just real clear skies here. the front has pushed through. that's left high pressure in its wake. so nothing but clear skies. the only thing that will keep temperatures tonight from bottoming out will be some wind. here's big thunderstorms in texas. i wanted to show you this. these are thunderstorms here. this is advancing with the same system that will come through on monday. we'll be tracking severe weather the next couple days coming out of the central plains, again high pressure in control here. we're just talking about clear skies tonight, low in the city of 41 degrees. we'll have some freezing conditions and the threat of frost just outside the beltway overnight tonight. sunny and cool tomorrow, 62, looks real nice to start the day, but on the cool side. lower 40s, upper 50s by lunchtime and lower 60s for highs tomorrow afternoon and

tomorrow evening. futurecast will show you we're in real good shape and on sunday as we take you through just a few clouds on sunday and nice and warm, too. your fox 5 accuweather seven- day forecast shows a warming trend, 72 sunday, a chance of some showers and thunderstorms monday with a high temperature of 74 and we cool back down into the 60s to right around 70 for the middle part of next week. >> thanks, gary. as we continue tonight, fox news sunday airing right here on fox at 9 a.m. will be dissecting the vice presidential debates and looking ahead to the next big debate between mitt romney and president obama. host chris wallace joined me earlier to give us his take and what we can expect on fox news sunday. we started off with the vp face- off. >> i think on substance it was pretty close. you know, certainly close enough that if you like one guy, you're going to think he won and vice versa.

style, i think was not as close. i think that biden was over the top with all the smirks and the grimaces and i think it probably fired up the base, a base that was down after obama's poor performance last week, but i'm not sure it's going to play as well with independent voters who may just see it as rude. >> any surprises in your opinion? >> well, i certainly was surprised, not that biden was aggressive but the theatrics when he wasn't speaking. that certainly surprised me. i thought they both did okay. in the end i don't think it makes much difference. it was fun to watch and millions of people did watch it, 40 million or so, but i think that by sunday, which i'm obviously concerned with, it will have been largely forgotten and people will be focusing on next week's presidential debate. in the end people vote for the top of the ticket. they don't vote for the running mate. >> let's talk about next week's

presidential debate, mitt romney, president obama. what can we expect in your opinion? >> well, i would be shocked if obama doesn't have a much better night than in the first one. i expect him to be much more aggressive and assertive in explaining and defending his record and his policy for the future and going after romney for what he says are lies or misrepresentations of where he really stands, that he's kind of doing a moderate makeover now that we're three weeks from election. for romney i would think his campaign staff and advisors would say do it again, you know. you were just perfect in the first one. do the same thing. be respectful, but make your case as to why obama does not deserve four more years and why you would take the country in a better direction, basically sell the choice. here's what we have now. here's what i'm offering. >> let's look ahead to fox news sunday. what can we expect? >> we'll have a debate between two top officials, on the 1

down some common myths that keep people from getting the annual vaccine. >> reporter: the flu shot is a must this year for eric dacac, a new dad to a little girl only 3 days old. >> got a newborn in the house and just to be extra special to keep our health up. >> reporter: not everyone shares his enthusiasm. >> i just feel like people get sick when they get it, so i try to avoid the best i can. >> reporter: the flu vaccine raised other concerns on our fox 5 facebook page. jessica says many vaccines are made with boaterred fetal cells. true? >> i'm not aware of any human cells used. we're talking serum from cows. >> reporter: tom skinner says there is no data to indicate any harmful effects associated with serum from cows, but this woman is not convinced. >> i feel like yes, it is unsafe. i feel you should use other methods like eat healthy. >> reporter: jessica believes

it's hit or miss with flu vaccines and writes. >> there's a 1% chance they use the right strain in the vaccine. >> i would say we have a very good track record, much higher than 1% success rate. >> reporter: another says i haven't had a hot and don't want one -- shot and don't want one especially after the shots that gave so many people meningitis. >> there's absolutely no connection whatsoever to the current situation involving meningitis and people having gotten flu shots. >> reporter: someone else worried about formaldehyde. >> there are minute amounts of formaldehyde in the vaccines, but knees levels are very, very low. >> reporter: skin -- these levels are very, very low. >> reporter: skinner says there are minimal side effects which include possibly a low grade fever and inflation around the injection site. would you ever get a flu shot? >> never. >> the cdc says people with severe allergies to
